Places & People
Places & People
by António Matias Coelho
It is the only Portuguese region that does not have the sea or any border with Spain. None like it is, therefore, so far inside the country.
Low and wide land, very easy to travel, it has always been more a place of passage than a place of permanence. Hence the diversity of elements that make up its culture, the result of multiple influences that have arrived here and time has melted.
Its name is the Tejo (Tagus river) that runs through it from end to end and gives it life and meaning. It is a land of nearby waters and a complex relationship with them. But it is not limited to the image of the lezíria, the meadows, the horses and the bulls to which they sometimes try to reduce it. It has other worlds in itself and wider horizons.
Ribatejo we called it a beautiful name they gave it.
Ribatejo has composed by a trilogy of different landscapes:
Bairro, represented in dark red
Lezíria, coloured in light blue
Charneca, the yellow portion of this map
The river Tagus and all the activities related to it are the soul of Ribatejo.
Should check a local website with all the information you will need to visit and understand this unique region.
Where river Tagus meet river Zêzere a castle in a middle of a small island was an important military building once.
What makes this island truly unique is the Lusitano horses from the Alter Stud Farm that live there in the wild.
There are some organised tours to discover Tagus river and some of Ribatejo most beautiful landscapes. Take the chance to know better not only the river but is life and history; as Rio A Dentro said: A river full of life, with a great natural, landscape and ecological wealth and a unique biodiversity.
Santarém
In spite of Ribatejo extending for different areas, including Lisboa district, the biggest portion of it is located in the district of Santarém. Santarém is also the name of the capital city of this district also known as The National Capital of the Gothic. This is one of the biggest districts in Portugal with 21 municipalities and every one has it's own characteristics that should be explored carefully.
Here emphasised the beautiful Coventos de São Francisco e de Santa Clara e a Igreja da Graça. Portas do Sol Garden overlooking Tagus river is also very emblematic and memorable.
Besides the land, the river and the monuments spread across all Ribatejo, it has a rich history of economic activities like traditional agriculture, wine production, cattle raising namely horses like the famous Lusitano unique in Portugal, river phishing and many others of interest.
In these brief lines the history of Avieiros and their villages along the river Tagus must me remember to explain how the people diversity appears in a such inland region. To survive the winter, they (Avieiros) exchanged their sea life on the Atlantic coast, for the calmer waters of the riversTagus. Seduced by a less harsh life, they started to remain there ... Meet this people from the river banks and get to know what is being done to preserve and spread their culture, that is a candidate for National Heritage. Escaroupim and Palhota are two of these incredible and picturesque villages.
Not less important are the gastronomy and the arts & crafts but this time you will discover by yourself when you travel across the magnificent Ribatejo. Enjoy!
